Take a look through these photos of a plasma rifle prop from the Fallout video game for inspiration on prop building. The guy has a few other projects as well. All show excellent finishing techniques, especially weathering.

For a bit of trivia, Richard Dean Anderson did voice acting in the first Fallout video game. So in addition to them being generally cool games, they have a big Stargate connection.
